| Costs:
Like most modern sports and hobbies, you can spend as little or as much as you like. Free flight and control line models are cheapest as they require no outlay for radio control equipment. A typical radio control package would include transmitter, receiver, charger, batteries, and servos. Packages range from small two function systems costing about $200 to programmable five function units costing upwards of $500.
Engines range from about $125 for a small two stroke up to about $500 for a large four stroke. Electric powered flight is becoming a popular branch of the hobby. Power systems for this option range from $150 to $300.
A comprehensive range of model kits is available. Some of these require full assembly by the modeller; others are available in a form which is almost ready to fly. Prices range from $100 to $300, for the aircraft only, plus any necessary outlay for radio equipment, engine, and accessories.
If you are new to aero modelling we strongly recommend that you talk to some of the Club's experienced flyers before you purchase any equipment. This will ensure that you acquire equipment that is suitable for use at Kelly Field and is value for money, and that you start with a combination of equipment which will maximise your success and enjoyment of the hobby. You should ensure that you choose a radio frequency which will not clash with those in use by other members of the club.
On no account should you attempt to fly your first aircraft by yourself. You are likely to wreck your investment, and also run the risk of personal injury and property damage.
