The Hobart Model Aero Club is the oldest and biggest model aircraft club in Tasmania. It was established in 1966 and has been based at Kelly Field since 1982. Many of the founders are still active members of the club. The club maintains a membership of about 80, of whom about 50 are regular flyers.
The club is devoted to the hobby and sport of model aircraft construction and flying. Most members fly radio controlled aircraft including Sport, Pattern, Pylon, Old Timers, Scale, Electric, Jets, and Gliders. The club also has facilities which can cater for the needs of members wishing to engage in free flight or control line activities.
We welcome newcomers to aero modelling. Club members can provide advice and guidance on construction of models and preparation for flight. New members are provided with tuition by nationally accredited flight instructors free of charge. The club has a trainer aircraft available for use in trial flights at a rental charge of $5 per flight. We offer two free instructional sessions for prospective members.
We have a 16 hectare flying field at Kelly Field near Richmond. Members of the public are welcome at all times. The most popular times for flying are Saturday and Sunday mornings, and most members fly all year round. A midday barbeque is held at Kelly Field on the first Sunday of each month. We have a grass strip facing roughly north south, with a shorter east west cross strip. The flight lines are unobstructed by trees and our pits can accommodate a large range of models. Most flying activities are carried out on an informal basis, however competitions are organised from time to time. Club members also engage in field trips and competitions at other clubs both in Tasmania and on the mainland.
